The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) releases the following upcoming event-related traffic and transit impacts for this week from Thursday, May 16 through Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

San Francisco Giants Baseball Games

Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19: The San Francisco Giants will play three home games at the ballpark. Listed below are start times for these games:

• Three games against the Colorado Rockies: 1) 7:15 p.m., Friday, May 17; 2) 1:05 p.m., Saturday, May 18 and 3) 1:05 p.m., Sunday, May 19.

Street Closures

To accommodate events that will take place at the ballpark, the following street closures will be enforced:

• Two and a half hours before the opening pitch, the SFMTA will close eastbound King Street between 3rd and 2nd streets to vehicle traffic. King Street will reopen after first pitch until the seventh inning.
• From the seventh inning until post-game traffic dies down, the SFMTA will again close eastbound King Street between 3rd and 2nd streets to vehicle traffic in order to reduce congestion on city streets.
• Additionally, the northbound portion of the 4th Street Bridge (Peter R. Maloney Bridge) will be closed to all traffic except Muni, taxis and bicycles during the post-game period.

Taxi Stands

• 2nd Street, west side, between Brannan and King Streets
• 2nd Street, east side, between Townsend and King Streets
• 3rd Street, west side, north of King Street

Special Event Parking Rates

During baseball games and other major events with more than 10,000 expected attendees at the ballpark, parking meters close to the ballpark will charge a special event rate of $10 per hour. These rates help reduce congestion and keep parking spots available in the neighborhoods near the ballpark, discouraging circling for free or cheap parking. Tenderloin Community Benefit District (TLCBD) Block Party

On Saturday, May 18, the TLCBD Block Party will take place in the Tenderloin community on Ellis Street between Leavenworth and Hyde streets, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ellis Street between Leavenworth and Hyde streets will be closed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday.

There will be no impact on Muni service.

Annual Bay to Breakers Race

Sunday, May 19: The annual Bay to Breakers Race will take place. The SFMTA will provide special Muni service to help Bay to Breakers participants and non-participants to get where they need to go.

Bay to Breakers’ unique geography cuts the city in half and provides only two crossing points for buses and vehicles (The Embarcadero and Crossover Dr). As a result, many Muni bus lines are divided into two parts – one on either side of the race. The easiest and fastest way to travel during Bay to Breakers is to stay on one side of the race route. For a real need to cross the route, the fastest ways are to use a train or to incorporate walking or rolling across the race route. Muni Metro Subway Lines J Church, K Ingleside, M Ocean View, N Judah, and S Shuttle; T Third Street in the Central Subway and BART are recommended for crossing under the race route without delay, and Muni’s bus routes will carry passengers as close as possible to the race route so they can cross “on foot” and pick the bus route back up on the other side.

This year Muni is excited to announce that early morning train service is back to help runners get to the Bay to Breakers starting line. Muni’s Bay to Breakers transit service plan is as follows:

Muni Service

Pre- and Post- Event Muni Fare

Muni customers are strongly encouraged to purchase their fare in advance or use Clipper Card to attend this event. For more information on using Clipper on Muni, visit clippercard.com/muni.

Muni customers may also use MuniMobile, an official SFMTA app, to save time by instantly buying tickets for Muni bus, rail, cable car, and paratransit services on their iPhone and Android devices. Tickets can be purchased through a credit/debit card or PayPal account for individual or multiple riders on one smartphone. Customers can buy tickets ahead of time and activate when they are ready to ride - with MuniMobile, your phone is your fare.

The SFMTA Mobile Sales Van will be located at Fulton and 48th Avenue for customers to purchase tickets from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Single Ride Muni Fare

A single ride fare on Muni is good for two hours of travel, whether it be on a single route or a trip with multiple transfers across buses and light rail. Customers who purchase their fares in advance using a Clipper® Card or to use the official SFMTA app, MuniMobile, can save 25 cents per trip. Pre-Race Transit Options to the Bay to the Breakers Starting Line

The 5R Fulton Rapid inbound bus will depart Cabrillo and La Playa streets every 10 minutes from 5:45 to 7:30 a.m. These buses will serve all 5R inbound stops.

N Judah inbound trains will depart Judah and La Playa streets every 20 minutes from 5:30 to 6:50 a.m. These trains will serve all N Judah stops except Civic Center, Powell, and Montgomery stations.

S Shuttle inbound trains will operate every 12 minutes between West Portal and Embarcadero stations from 6 to 8 a.m. These trains will serve all Muni Metro stations except Civic Center, Powell, and Montgomery stations.

Regular early morning bus services on 5 Fulton, N Judah Bus, and L Owl will be in operation as well.

Post-Race Transit Options Departing from the Bay to Breaker Finishing Line

The 5R Fulton Rapid Inbound will depart Cabrillo and La Playa streets every 10 minutes from 10:30 to 2 p.m.

Extra N Judah trains will be in service.

Extra 28 19th Avenue buses will be in service.

Impacts to regular Muni service during Bay to Breakers

The following bus routes are split in half by the Bay to Breakers Race Route at Howard, 9th, Hayes, Divisadero, or Fulton streets. Buses on these routes will bring customers as close as possible to the race route and drop them off. Customers looking to get to the other side must cross the race route “on foot” and board a new bus on the other side. These routes are: 7 Haight/Noriega, 8 Bayshore, 9 San Bruno, 12 Folsom/Pacific, 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 19 Polk, 22 Fillmore, 24 Divisadero, 27 Bryant, 33 Ashbury/18th Street, 43 Masonic, 49 Van Ness/Mission, F Market & Wharves Bus

The following bus lines are impacted by the race route and will provide service on one side of the race only: 6 Haight/Parnassus (west side), 15 Bayview Hunters Point Express (south side), 30 Stockton (north side), 45 Union/Stockton (north side)

The following routes will be rerouted via Crossover Dr: 18 46th Avenue and 44 O’Shaughnessy

The following Early Morning Routes will be rerouted in the downtown area: K Ingleside Bus, N Judah Bus, L Owl, T Third Street Bus

The F Market & Wharves Line Street Cars will operate on The Embarcadero only, between Ferry Plaza and Fisherman’s Wharf. F Line buses will operate on Market Street. These services will remain in place all day.

New service for 2024:

• South Side of Race Route: Muni routes 8 Bayshore and 12 Folsom/Pacific inbound service will go as far as Central Subway’s Yerba Buena Station.
• North Side of Race Route: Muni routes 8 Bayshore and 12 Folsom/Pacific outbound service will go as far as the Embarcadero Station where customers can transfer to Muni or BART to continue their trip.

During the Bay to Breakers event, Muni service will be available to customers who need to cross the race route:

• J Church, K Ingleside, M Oceanview, N Judah and S Shuttle:
  
  • Train service at these stations will open at 6 a.m.: West Portal, Forest Hill, Castro, Church, Van Ness, and Embarcadero
  • Train service at these stations will open at 7:30 a.m.: Civic Center, Powell, and Montgomery
• T Third train service in Central Subway will start at 8 a.m.
• Bus routes via Crossover Dr:

Regional Transit Options

BART and Caltrain will operate special early Sunday morning service and Private Chartered Buses will operate express buses from Mill Valley, Emeryville and Millbrae BART stations for the race. Race participants and fans using Bay Area public transportation systems are strongly encouraged to purchase their fares in advance or use Clipper® Card to attend this event. • Instead of the usual Sunday morning start at 8 a.m., BART will run select service to limited BART stations to get to Bay to Breakers. For more information visit www.bart.gov/news/.

Harvey Milk Day 2024

Sunday, May 19: A block party for a tribute to Harvey Milk and a celebration of life and legacy of the “Mayor of Castro Street” will take place from noon to 5 p.m. in Jane Warner Plaza at Castro and 17th Street.

There will be no street closure for the event.

The F Market & Wharves Muni line will be impacted.

CONSTRUCTION WORK AND OTHER UPDATES

UPDATE: L Taraval Improvement Project—Segment B

The L Taraval Improvement Project is a multi-agency collaboration to improve safety, accessibility, and transit reliability, and to rehabilitate aging rails, utility lines and roadway pavement along the L Taraval line between Sunset Boulevard and 15th Avenue and on Ulloa Street near West Portal.

Infrastructure replacement work on sewer and water lines are mostly completed. Track installation is complete. Construction of accessible curb ramps and handrails, barriers and pavers that are part of the boarding islands continues.

Street base work is complete. Special track work at 46th Avenue already started. Buses will be rerouted around the construction area. The intersection on the south side will be closed to northbound traffic.

Curb-to-curb repaving of the entire Taraval corridor started on Monday, May 6 and is expected to take approximately three weeks. The paving work will be divided into three segments. During this work, parking will be removed on both sides of the street and traffic detoured around the area.

46th Avenue Track Work

• Installation

Nighttime work is scheduled from Sunday through Friday, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sundays through Fridays

• Ulloa Street between 15th and Forest Side avenues: OCS prep work for installation, removing and reconstructing existing poles, upgrade the Overhead Contact System (OCS) that powers the trains. Work on any given block will vary and is expected to take a few hours to a few days per location. OCS work is expected to be completed in June 2024.

The L Bus now runs between West Portal and the SF Zoo. Customers can transfer to a train at West Portal Station to travel downtown. An interactive bus reroute map with temporary bus stop relocations citywide during construction can be found on Interactive Bus Reroute.

During construction, the L Taraval bus stops are being relocated. The inbound bus stop at Taraval Street and 15th Avenue has been relocated across the intersection until fall 2024.

Masks Recommended

Masks are no longer required, but are encouraged in any SFMTA facilities, transit hubs or on vehicles including Muni buses, streetcars, light rail vehicles or cable cars or in taxis or on paratransit.

ONGOING: Essential Trip Card Discount Program

The SFMTA’s program, Essential Trip Card (ETC) Program, assists people with disabilities and older adults to make essential trips using taxis. The program provides two to three round trips at an 80% discount per month, i.e. rider pays $6 to receive a value of $30 or pays $12 to receive a $60 value. If essential needs require it, riders may receive additional value up to $120 of taxi service per month.

To qualify for the program, customer must be either age 65 or older or an adult with disabilities. Eligible adults may apply for the ETC program by calling the Paratransit Mobility Management office at 415-351-7053.
